RED HOUSE Bexleyheath, Kent. The Home Of William MorrisA tribute to Ted & Doris Hollamby. |
![]() |
In 1952 Ted and Doris Hollamby moved into the Red House with another family, the Toms, who worked to restore it as the William Morris home and the Phillip Webb designed house. In 1965 the Toms moved on and Ted and Doris continued to restore the house to the William Morris original purpose, enshrined in the arts and crafts principles. During the forty years that have elapsed much has been achieved and the house must closely reflect the ambiance of the Morris family's early days. Ted encouraged the national interest and opened the house to the visiting public thus ensuring its reputation as a landmark building. In the late 1996 the Friends of Red House was formed followed in two years by the Red House Trust. Both organisations have worked to support Ted's ambitions and it was a sad loss when he died, unexpectedly, in last days of 1999.ÝWe, who were his friends, salute his dedication and his scholarship. The many visitors to the house, his home, will miss his detailed and, often, humorous lectures.ÝÝThe Red House now belongs to the National Trust |
